The Art of Being Johnny Cash

What can I say? The guy’s a legend, written in stone. I was listening to The Mercy Seat yesterday when I thought it’ll be interesting to dig around for artistic pictures of Johnny Cash. I’ve always been wondering how the general public perceives and remembers Cash: Will it be the young, reckless guitar hero or his mellow/weary American Recordings-era persona?
I spent an hour or two and compiled this great collection of Johnny Cash fan art. Judging by the large number of template graffiti and mural shots, Cash is really becoming Che Guevara-tized. He’s truly an American icon.
Rest in peace, Johnny. We remember you well.

Wow..That’s a kick ass collection of pictures. I love the murals… Johnny lives!
I’ve been a fan of the Man in Black ever since I was a teen over 20 years back.. he’s really a class act and totally deserves to be honored. Thanks for collecting all the lovely images.

Great collection! I have a Johny Cash play-the guitar book which I bought in 1956 in Prince George, B.C. to go with my new $15 mail-order guitar. Later went to two different live concerts …Fantastic!
He was once guest artist on our local “Circle Seven Ranch” black-and-white TV show where me and my girlfriend were demonstration squaredancers. I met him in the hall between takes and was going to speak to him, but looked in his troubled dark eyes and thought he’d prefer to be left alone. This was during his bad times, like before he got together with June Carter.(Didn’t know what to say anyhow. Probably should have said: “Hey Johny, got any cash?) Mmmmm, maybe not.
Hey Dave,
Flat out awesome that you’ve got to met Cash in person. Thanks for sharing bro. Very cool.
Loved the duo picture of Johnny and Elvis! That was a classic shot to say the least. Both came from very poor upbringings, both got their start in Sun Studio (Memphis, TN) and both were very spiritual in their own way. Would be neat to have someone put together the two artist’s similarity’s sometime!
Johnny will live-on through his music, family and friends forever! Yes, Johnny was a living legend and will be forever!
